n the1stOctober 2015, the
UgandaCoffee Industry
joined the restof theworld to
commemorate the1st International
CoffeeDay.Thisdaywasadoptedby
the International CoffeeOrganisation
(ICO) and launched inMilan, asaday
tocelebratecoffee sectordiversity,
qualityandpassion.
InUganda,wehavebeencelebrating
theUgandaCoffeeDayand this
was the6thevent thathas since
transformed into the International
CoffeeDay.Theeventwasheldat
Great LakesAgriculturalDevelopment
Farm (GLADFarm) inKapeeka–
NakasekeDistrictoneof thehighest
coffeegrowingdistrictsofUganda.
The theme for thedaywas: “Focuson
Productivity:TheCoffeeSector at the
ClimateChangeFrontline”.Theevent
wasaimedat enhancing thecapacity
of coffee stakeholdersandpolicymaker
inobtaining reliableclimatechange
informationanddata, interpretationof
risks, applicationof resultant knowledge
tomainstreamclimatechange
adaptation, planningandmitigation
measures.
Theeventwasgracedbyvarious
stakeholders includingCoffee farmers,
traders, exporters, roastersandofficials
fromOperationWealthCreationwith
approximately45%women.
Thehost andDirectorofGLADFarm
noted that theEstatecomprisedof 800
acreswhere theestate isanucleus farm
on220acresand the restdistributed
to smallholder farmers.TheFarm
aimsat changing theperceptionof
agriculture in thecommunityandhence
their slogan“Farming, frompenalty to
profession”.
