Coffee A Cup is also implementing a
program to encourage the planting
and conservation of indigenous trees
to among other factors provide good
shade on coffee farms and help to
conserve soils.

Being thecoffee farmers’voice,
NUCAFE started thecampaign
toadvocate for thedevelopment
of theNational CoffeePolicyway
back in2008whichwasapproved
and launched inDecember 2013,
NUCAFE steers small holder farmer
participation in lobbyandadvocacy,
and thisbuildsacommonvoice for a
collectiveaction toaddress issues that
affect them in their coffee farming
businesses.
Thedevelopmentof thecoffeepolicy
has contributed to improving the
enablingenvironment and further to
buildon the farmers’ involvement in
thepolicy implementation; to this,
NUCAFEhas takena stepahead. In
theeffort tooperationalize thepolicy
and increase smallholder farmer
participation in its implementation,
NUCAFE inpartnershipwithUSAID
Ugandahas reachedover 10,000
farmers through sensitizationsunder
theGenderBasedAdvocacy for the
Implementationof theNational Coffee
PolicyActivity.
TheActivityhasmainly focusedon
increasingcoffeeproductivityamong
men,womenandyouth in100coffee
farmerOrganizations.The special focus
onwomenandyouthputsemphasis
onbringingout thecritical roles they
play incoffeeproductionandaddress
pertinent concerns that affects their

participation. Asa result, therehas
been increasedawarenessabout the
National CoffeePolicyamong the
smallholder farmersandengagingof
differentpartners thathas facilitated
coffee regulations reformsand thishas
immenselycontributed to thegood
enablingenvironment.
Specifically, thisactivityhasboosted
youth involvement in thecoffee sub
sector throughawareness creationand
emphasison identifyingopportunities
that theycouldbe linked toalong the
coffeevaluechain.Themainemphasis
toattract them to invest incoffeeand
facilitate their innovations to foster
improved jobcreation.Theactivity
specificallyorganisedaNational
CoffeeFestival under the theme
‘Youth innovations; anavenue for job
creation’.This targetedboth rural and
urbanyouth to tap intoopportunities
suchasnurseryestablishment and
management, baristaandprocessing.

consultationsand
advocacy forums
fromwhereposition
papershave
beendeveloped
asa resultof the
recurring policy
issues facedby
farmersonground.
Thishasboosted
theirownership
of the identified
issuesandhence
influenced their
participationandability toalso
lobby for availableopportunities
startingwith subcountiesanddistrict
soas tocontribute to increased
coffeeproductionandproductivity.
Promotionofgender equity starting
fromhouseholdshasbeen recorded
especially through increasedwomen
participation in thedifferent activities.
Tobringaboutmore learning in the
process, partnershipshavebeen
critical andNUCAFE isworkingwith
organizations for exampleUSAIDFeed
theFutureEnablingEnvironment
Activity (EEA),UgandaNational
FarmersFederation, UgandaCoffee
DevelopmentAuthority,Uganda
CoffeeFederation&CaféAfrica to
mentiona few. Thesecollaborations
havebeenpertinent in facilitating
learning through sharingexperiences
aswell as theadoptionofbest
practices formoreeffectiveand
impactful implementationof the
activity.
