he themeof today’s
event is “Underscoring
Stakeholders in
AchievingUganda’s Vision
2020”. This theme is in
largemeasurea step to
operationalisationof President
Yoweri K. Museveni vision
anddirective. For thecoffee
sector, ThePresident was
very clear and itemised this
Vision to real targets in a
directive toCabinet members
responsible for this sector;
Ugandawill plant 900million
coffee trees, expanding
production and exports from
current fourmillionbags to
20million60-kgbags by
2020. Therefore friends,
thegame is on and it is
#KisanjaHakunaMchezo. I
want tobelieve that indeed
themedium term target shall
be toexport 20millionbags
of valuedadded/ processed
coffee.
You see, all this cannot
happenunless all
stakeholders along the coffee
valuechain are tunedon –
andcollectively takingaction
in amutual, fair and robust
manner. As you areaware,
thecoffeebean is and has
formany years been themost
valuablecommodity ona
global scaleonly second to
oil. It will continue tobe so
for awhile andUgandahas
thepotential, pedigree and
bandwidth to take leadership
at production level, value
addition and retention level,
coffee jobs level, foreign
exchange earnings level-
andother vertically and
horizontally integrated levels.
We cannot slipup.
I will today not focus on
technical and scientific
aspects of coffee, numbers
and figures of export and
foreign exchangeearnings
etc.!We have scientists,
policymakers, technocrats
andpractitioners in the
audience. I will save that for
