There is nodoubt that
coffee isUganda’smain
export crop. Uganda is
ranked the 2nd largest
coffeeproducer in
Africa and10thglobally.
Currently, coffee
sustains over 1.7million
households. Recent
export statistics records
an increase inCoffee
exports in2015/2016,
domestic consumption
however estimating at
3% of the total national
production, depicting that
most Ugandancoffee
production is for export.
The lowConsumption
levels areaffiliated to low
purchasingpower due
to several cultural myths
about theproduct aswell
as anentrenched tea
drinkingculture. Lowper
capitacoffeeconsumption
inproducing countries
have for years beena
source of debate in the
market. All theway upuntil
theboom in coffee culture
in earnest started to
consolidate in the last five
years, the key question
has beenwhy countries
known toproduce top
quality beanswould not
havehigher consumption
in their homemarkets.
Thehistory behind
the evolutionof coffee
consumption, however,
was never eyed for the
producing countries
themselves. Developing
countries all started
growing coffeebecause
colonial powerswanted
coffee for the export
market; hence the local
population inproducing
countries across theworld
was never encouraged to
even try theproduct.
