Bill will commence. The
draft CoffeeBill shouldbe of
interest tocoffee stakeholders
as it aims to implement the
objectives of theNational
CoffeePolicy of 2013 and
promote thedevelopment of
the coffee subsector.
In the last year, UCDA
implementedademand-
driven approach in seedlings
distribution andplantings
in order to elicit farmers’
interest and responsibility. In
addition, theAuthority initiated
aprocess of registering all
coffee farmers in thecountry.
Theexercise, which is still
on-going, is expected to
roll out to the rest of the
country later thismonth.
Youthdeployedat
sub-county level will use
smart phones andgadgets
to register key details of
the farmers including their
location, acreage andnumber
andage of coffee trees. I
call upon you to fully support
andparticipate in this critical
activitywhichaims to collect
accuratedata that will assist
inplanningof interventions in
the coffee sub sector.
Thepreparations for the
commemoration of UCDA’s
25 years of existence are
underway. For posterity’s sake
UCDA is documenting its
achievements since inception
by compiling information
fromhistorical records and
archives and interviews of
key stakeholders in the coffee
subsector andbeyond. I invite
you toparticipate in these
activities as theywill provide
anopportunity to increase
visibility of theachievements
of key stakeholders in the
coffee industry in the last 25
years.
Finally, I thankUCFmembers
for the immense contribution
to thedevelopment of the
coffee industry. This givesme
great confidence that together
wewill attain the high targets
set under thecoffee strategy.
I look forward toour
continued engagement
in the coming year.
In
August 2015,
His Excellency, the
President of the Republic
of Uganda, issued a directive
to increase production from the
current 4million60-kg bags to
20million60-kg bags by 2020.
This strategy is in syncwith the
National Development Plan
II whichaims tomove the
country to a lowermiddle
income status by the
year 2020.
