any times I come
across individuals
either Corporates or
businessmenwhowant to
venture into coffeeespecially
at production level. Just like
them, we share the same
story about thepassion for
Coffee. ManyCorporates
haveacquired largechunks
of land in the country side
which remain idle andnow
that Government is promoting
coffeeproduction they feel
that they can venture into
that enterprise. Here coffee
production is not away of
lifeand to a lesser extent a
development activity.
AlthoughGovernment has
comeupwith aCoffeeVision
of 20Millionbags by 2020
(Vision 2020) it will not create
transformation; it can only
enable it bymakingmore
room for businesses and
individuals to interveneby
putting the right policies
and regulations inplace, by
creating strong institutions,
andbuilding sufficient
infrastructure.
Transformationof the coffee
sector has tobe ledby the
private sector. This includes
venturing intoCoffeeNursery,
coffee farming, coffee trading
(aggregators/ middlemen)
processing, exportingand
roasting. The coffee nursery
stage is already saturated in
many districts this is because
Inmy position I have topromote
coffeeat all times and at all
levels and at no timehave I ever
discouraged anybody from venturing
into the sub-sector. Coffee farming
is abusiness and themorewe treat
it as abusiness, as away tocreate
wealth, themore it will promote
development and improvepeople’s
lives. Oneway to treat it like a
business is toget theprivate sector
more involved in it.
